Almost everyone has been to the dry cleaners once in their life, but what do they really do? And why is it good for your clothing? Even Mirriam Webster defines it as: A business that does dry cleaning. It is not odd that it is a bit of a mystery.
So here a short explanation to what dry cleaning actually entails.
Dry cleaning actually has little to do with using water, while many people think that is the case it is not. Dry cleaning means cleaning clothes using a chemical solvent rather then water. This solvent is not absorbed by textile fibers, this causes the clothing to retain its original form. This all happens in a machine that is best comparable to a washing machine but 10x its size. Best described as “super washing machine” basically. Because clothing doesn’t actually get wet in the process it is called “Dry” cleaning!. The solvent used to dry clean is well suited to removing (grease) stains and actually avoids the very fibers of the clothing while removing the stains that are layered on top. This makes it so that clothes become clean, look beautiful and avoid shrinkage and wrinkles. This way even the most delicate fabrics can be cleaned appropriately.
